WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGNING
Graphic Designing is all around us. On the cover of the book you read last night, the advertisement in the papers for the edgiest TV in town, the very structure of your favourite website- it is all design. Design was once the domain of artists who could sketch and reproduce on hard covers, but with the advent of internet, design is now majorly digital.
A graphic designer uses visuals and texts to explain an idea as concisely and vividly as possible. Using the elements of colour, texture, size, lines, shape and space, graphic design can accentuate a message. The principles of repetition, contrast, space, font size, balance and hierarchy of order combine to deliver a powerful and precise message.
Graphic designing can be used by websites to create a unique persona, or to organize their flow of information. It can be used by mobile app developers to provide a one-on-one experience for the users. It can be used by a publishing company to attract a potential reader’s eyes through the use of graphics on the book cover. Else, think of some of the most famous brands in the world- did you picture their logo too? That logo was designed by a graphic designer. The sticker on your favourite ketchup and the print on your favourite tee were all made by a graphic designer!
Some well-known roles of a graphic designer are as an animator, or a creative director, flash designer, logo designer or web designer. The most commonly used programs that every graphic designer must know are Adobe products such as Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign, Adobe Dreamweaver and PowerPoint.
The roles of graphic designers are many and diverse, and one can easily carve a niche. If you have a good sense of visual aesthetics, are creative and have team-playing skills, graphic designing could be the best job for you!
